The Handwritten Forward Story
What began as a scrawled note on a napkin in early August 2014 has become much more.
While sitting at a bar in downtown Columbus, Ohio, Rylie James told her husband that she had an idea. She wanted to quit her corporate job and… write. The dream of being a children’s author had been alive for countless years, but this wasn’t the definition of “write” she was going for. Some people can sing, others can dance, act, play sports, or sculpt. Others, though, have talents that are a little harder to figure out.
From an early age, Rylie James had been told that her “way with words” was something to be admired. However, not too many people can make a career based upon nice penmanship. It has become apparent, though, that sometimes avenues close themselves off so that you must take the road less traveled. When the corporate world became one that no longer appealed to RJ, she knew she had to make a change. She also knew that there are times when the only mode of transportation that one can take is a leap of faith.
By November 2014, only four months from the moment that the idea of Handwritten Forward struck, demand became too high. Handwriting on every single piece was something that could no longer happen. But, no one knew exactly how to go about growing the young company.
In February 2015, HF began to grow. At a small meeting around a dining room table, four Distributors came on board. The idea was for them to handle the demand of local art and craft shows as well as to be the point of contact for the small stores that were asking for HF pieces. This, in theory, would allow RJ more time to keep up with demand.
By May 2015, it was more than apparent that a drastic change was needed. Recreating pieces over and over was choking RJ’s creativity. Having so many ideas in mind but not having time to make them happen became a vicious cycle. Then, the idea that she had been waiting for became laughably obvious. It was as though the idea had been there all along, just waiting for someone to notice it.
Now, here we are… A young company with big dreams.
Our goal is simple: Create quality handmade products that inspire others. We know that one positive thought, one moment of laughter, one sincere smile, can change your whole day. We have found a way to create our 100% handmade pieces on a large scale as to spread some positivity as far as possible while staying true to our roots.
HF is currently looking for distributors. Interested?
